Year of STEAM 22-23
AGPS Year of STEAM!
This year, we are celebrating the year of STEAM (Science technology, engineering, art and mathematics).
Our school motto is everyone is different, everyone is equal and everyone is welcome. To recognise and celebrate this, we want to raise the aspirations of all our students to aspire to employment in the STEAM industries. There is a lack of diverse representation in science, maths and technology but our year of STEAM seeks to promote and challenge stereotypes.
Our school understand and embrace the benefits to children and young people of having a mix of STEAM skills and the importance of a broad education that gives parity to science, technology, engineering, arts and maths subjects. We are committed to our students needing STEAM skills to reach their potential and are passionate about STEAM being essential for creating a workforce that solves the problems of the future.
There are four primary skill areas necessary for success in the 21st century:
-
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
-
Communication
-
Collaboration
-
Creativity & Innovation
Art and Design technology- We have already had some wonderful art and DT parent workshops involving things such as mask making, space landscapes and creating cardboard structures for our vehicles. We also have several art clubs running throughout the year focusing on something different each week where children get the opportunity to use a range of materials and try different techniques.
Our recent talent show showcased wonderful artistic work from across school and we also run art competitions (such as our yearly Christmas card competition) throughout the year.
Our year 6 children will be involved in an upcoming project with a visiting organisation. Throughout the curriculum, the children enjoy showing their development of their skills in their sketchbooks and DT books which follow them from year 3 to year 6.
Last year we had an art exhibition during our open day and we will be hosting an exhibition this year too in the last half term. We will also be running a Design Technology club in the summer term so watch this space!
